The Cotton and Rice Project
My ongoing project, Cotton and Rice, explores one of the largest recorded slave auctions in the U.S.- illuminating the stories of and paying homage to the 436 people sold through the auction.
To date, the project's evolving body of work encompasses a series of hand-quilted textile works, Ritual Cloths, a performance, sound work, small-scale installations, printed works on paper, artist books, and a zine series. My journey in telling this story has led me to the project's current series, 436, 436 handwoven, textile-based sculptures embodying each enslaved person sold in the auction.
